DAY 6: YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

TIOGA ROAD & TUOLUMNE MEADOWS

North Yosemite, today’s destination, is a very different beast to what you’ve so far experienced around Yosemite Valley and in the southern sections of the park. Leaving the Valley behind and climbing the TIOGA ROAD, you’re moving up into the High Sierra, a landscape of lakes and meadows flanked by craggy peaks. It’s a very scenic drive, with some particularly magnificent views to be from OLMSTEAD POINT, a lookout that surveys a great canvas of milky rock worked smooth by ancient glaciers and dotted with erratic boulders. Just a few miles further east, park up by gorgeous TENAYA LAKE for a swim in the crystal-clear waters and to picnic amongst the firs and pine trees that line its shores. Just over six miles beyond the lake, the road levels out at TUOLUMNE MEADOWS, bucolic sub-alpine meadows that are cut through by the winding Tuolumne River and surrounded by majestic peaks and domes. There are several pretty walks around the Visitor Centre here, the most interesting of which heads out across the meadows and over the Tuolumne River (perfect stone-skimming territory) to some soda springs that bubble up from the ground inside a log enclosure. By the time you cross the TIOGA PASS, which marks the western entrance to Yosemite, some 46.5 miles from the start of the Tioga Road, you’ll have climbed nearly 4000ft up through some of the park’s most picturesque high country.
